Designing your office? Space Planning, what is that?

Designing your office?

Office Design . . . . Are you moving? Relocating? Upsizing? Growing? Downsizing?… Or,  your lease, is it up for renewal? One of the first areas you need to work on is . . . Space Planning.

What is Space Planning that you ask? Well, it is kinda like playing Tetris, it is the fitting of oddly shaped blocks in a confined box, thus fitting them in, in the right order. This is done to make space work and, subsequently, creating effective & productive workplaces.

Here are 3 tips on space planning your new WorkPlace

Tip # 2 – Exploring different layouts

You can explore a multitude of ideas by drawing up different layouts that can be rearranged, reworked and tweaked to suit your needs. A multitude of desk layouts may be used to achieve the layout that will work best for you, therefore creating your most effective WorkSpace.  There are many options, e.g. benching workstations, L-Workstations, 360-degree workstations, and workstations that work 90 degrees off a spine.

Different desk options allow for different types of work that needs to be done. Ensure you have a done a needs assessment and space analysis before you decide on which option will be best. Here is a link to PurpleChilli’s free WorkPlace assessment: free workplace analysis

Tip # 3 – Components to remember

Remember to factor in access to power, I.T, and telephones, their positioning needs to be strategic. Plan where these points need to go, and in addition, indicate them on the Space Planning layout. Include planning of all plumbing works for kitchens and Restrooms. Look at where existing plumbing is, and as a result, find the best way to route water and waste.  Plan storage of stationary, brooms, and other miscellaneous items. Do Not forget to plan passageways that are in accordance with the local fire departments by-laws, since you will be required to get sign off from local authorities.
